Honda CRV EPS Light After Towing?

Short version: Anyone had problems with the EPS (Electric Power Steering) warning light after towing? How about EPS, VSA and TPMS all at the same time? What was the root problem?

Long version: After a couple weeks on the road (mostly towing 4 hrs, stop for 2 days, repeat); the EPS warning dash light came on. At the same time, the transmission was locked into park. I unlocked the transmission (putting the key in that little slot by the shifter) and was able to start it and maneuver the car around for hook up; but was afraid to drive it any more. I towed it home; just dropped it off at the dealer this evening. The service tech who checked me in said it probably was a weak battery from towing. Also – by this time, when I disconnected and drove it a block to the service bay, the VSA (traction/stability control) light and TPMS (tire pressure) lights were also on.

What baffles me, is that the first issue (EPS light), occurred as I was hooking it up for tow one morning. The prior day, I’d driven it approx. 3 hours with no issue or warning light. The battery should have been in good shape. Also, I started it that morning and moved a few feet, no warning light. I then back out the RV, and attempted to move the CRV up for hook up. This is when I hit the transmission lock and EPS light issue – 5 minutes after I’d had no problem starting, shifting, or driving it.

I’m awaiting a call from Honda tomorrow (it’s a 6 month old 2014, under warrantee). Anyone have experience with the transmission lock, EPS, VSA and TPMS warning lights, all at the same time?

  • Honda CRV's are noted for having a weak battery. The battery is fine for normal driving but does not have enough reserve capacity for being towed with the key in the accessory position. The fix is to replace the OEM battery with a group 24 battery with at least 800CCA +. This is not a warrantable issue since the OEM battery is sufficient for normal driving.
