Perhaps one reason why some folks will run a hose and then have it freeze up and then are surprised is simply because of lack of experience, and sometimes ONLY the school of Hard Knocks is the only teacher they will listen to.
How many times have you (or me) attempted to warn our kids about something that could potentially not turn out they way they expected. As children they throw temper tantrums. As adults, they simply turn away think Mom and Dad are crazy, until IT happens! But then they are often too proud to admit parents were right.
Well, unfortunately, there's a LOT of people "out there" who have this same mentality. They know it all! You can try and try to reach them, but some folks just know better than you! So ... you just have to let them make their own mistakes, and then silently cry under breath ... "if only they would have listened."
I've learned I can't be responsible for the rest of the world. I can offer my advise and experience and the world can take it or leave it. But if they leave it, THEY have to figure out how to fix it. They probably won't listen to my solution for a fix either anyway! When that happens, I can only be thankful I had a good head on my shoulders and it didn't happen to me.
About the water tank. I no longer keep my hose attached under pressure to my camper any more. I always fill my fresh water tank and pump from there. The water pump may be a bit noisy, but I never have to worry about campground water pressure being too much, or too little. I don't have to worry about the garden hose getting too hot in the summer and potentially breaking (which did happen to us once), or freezing in the winter (which has never happened to us), or if the campground looses water for whatever reason (which has also happened to us a few times).
If your on-board tank is heated, especially in the winter.... by all means ... YES, that is the way to do it! Fill the tank, disconnect the garden hose, drain it dry, and then put the hose away until the next use.
