Hook up a hose or fill fresh water tank in cold weather ?

I'll fill the tank when I get to the campground. Last weekend it was cold and I had my son cover the hose with a foot of leaves and it actually kept the hose from freezng, also filled he box where the spigot is with leaves. My neighbors hose froze solid. Had my son take to the bath house for him and put in a hot shower to the it out.
