Some of us don't have a smart phone to keep us occupied. It doesn't take much to get me to comment. "We know a lot 'cause we've seen a lot"....:B
BTW I never mentioned the horses. Most of us ALWAYS carry precious cargo. From my career as a commercial pilot, I always had it in my mind that if I never panicked, never lost control of my aircraft, did everything possible in order to save my life,.....and succeeded,......THEN, incidentally, I would end up saving everyone else's life. Being hooked on adrenaline most of my life, getting "cut off" on the freeway is fairly boring. IMO it's certainly no reason to panic and lose control.
Either way, the subject incident IMO was "pilot error". It shall be the responsibility of the pilot in command to make sure all the equipment is in good working order PRIOR to takeoff.
