Hot water heater not working

Went out for the first trip of the year and the hot water heater will not work. Will not work on gas or electricity. I could think of some reasons for one or the other not to work but can't think of why it would not work either way. Doesn't seem like gas even tries to light.
Worked fine last fall.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Don't know.. I was thinking of the gas part.
  • New battery, bought last fall. Just for my information, why would electric part of water heater not work if battery was bad? I was hooked to electricity and everything else worked. Thanks
  • I had a similar problem a few weeks ago when I was getting ours ready for the season. Mine would try to ignite but wasn't getting gas. I shut the tanks off, bled the pressure off the system. Then I turned the gas back on, slowly. Went inside and lit the stove to get the gas flowing. After that I was able to fire up the water heater on the second try.
