I turn mine on when I get setup at the camp ground and it stays on until I leave. As far as propane goes the usage is so little I don't even notice it. I use it like I do at home. I don't turn my water heater at home off when I am not using it. As someone else noted the water says pretty hot unless being used so it very seldom comes on to reheat and when it does it doesn't stay on very long.
