Have a friend with a motor home who said one should not turn the hot water heater on until you are ready to use hot water and then turn it off afterward. Never heard of such a thing. They are new...

I turn ours (10 gallon) on both electric and propane when we set up and it stays until we leave. Both at the same time improves recovery time and we do not have to worry about running out of hot water even during a longer shower. And electric keeps the water hot and keeps the propane from cycling on/off during the night.
