This. Happened to me once because of my error. Took a long time to clean out the HW tank.

i've seen that on one RV a friend had
something to do with the water where he lived
setting in the heater in storage
its been ten years and i don't remember the explanation
whether it was chemical or bacterial, seem to think it was something to do with sulfur content, i do remember it smelled that way

If a suburban pull the anode rod. If an attwood open the pressure relieve valve and let the water run a while.

It is most likely very fine air bubbles. Fill a glass and let it settle. If it is clear and there is no sediment you have nothing to worry about.

sounds like your tank needs a good flushing out. most likely lime deposits built up in the tank.
