RV fridge: Can run on Gas or electric, Not as good in super hot weather.. Some folks worry about fire since Gas is a fire (Very small and controlled one) and there is flamable chemicals in the cooling loop.
Residential fridge: Just got done reading a food safety article
Without power food remains safe for up to 4 hours if you keep the door closed (Always thought it was 8) Freezers last a bit longer.
Frankly I know there are Absorption cooling units that have been operating longer than I have been operating (Breathing air, I'm a Beatles Song,, If you can figure out my age from that. You are likely in the same age group) and they have never even been serviced beyond routine cleaning.
I trust the RV fridge.. and if it does catch Fire.. Nationwide's problem.
You are correct, I have a cabin that has no electrical service but does have propane service. We use a Servel Propane fridge that is from the 50's? I would guess. Still works perfectly and keeps the fridge cold even in 100+ temps inside the cabin. Too bad modern absorption fridges won't even last a 10th of that amount of time or work nearly as well.
