Not really. It is also useful for reducing the intrusion of someone who has a personal ax to grind and follows you around in every thread that you participate in making nasty comments and threats.
Saying "just ignore it" is good advice......but some of us are weak and others can take just so much.
I do NOT believe that blocking an individual will block entire threads.

sam spade blocking someone does not block someone from seeing you posts nor replying to them. It only blocks you from viewing the reply.
I have found that more often than not, the ones doing the blocking are the ones that offend others the most and refuse to accept the replies when they are corrected, or admonished for being offensive, such as calling someone stupid, moron, idiot, or any number of names.
