Miles per year very difficult to assess because it has varied so widely. For example, we barely did 2K towing in '14 whereas the year we spent the summer in Alaska, we were pushing 20K. If I had to state an average over the 14 years it would be somewhere around 4K moving the rig.
As to how we decide where to go next, sometimes it's word of mouth and many times it's as simple as that we've never been there before. Our single most comprehensive and reliable source has been local chambers of commerce websites that are usually a treasure trove of information.

To be sure planning was always a big part of my life. Doing so enabled me to retire at 49 and my wife at 45. I literally started planning my retirement when I was 15 :) and made it a year sooner than my goal. Since getting on the road, not having to plan has been a major benefit.
