If we have the grandkids with us we're more likely to stay at a KOA. Even though they charge more they usually are more "kid friendly". If we don't have the grandkids, KOA's are down the list of likely stops. If it's just us we don't use any of the amenities you pay more for at a KOA. We use bathrooms and sometimes the shower. Usually the electricity, water, and sewer are about the same between a KOA and another campground. Since we "RV" and don't "camp", we don't care very much about spaces between units, fire rings, ability to sit outside, etc.
We seem to see around $15 difference between a KOA and someplace else. Sometimes there really isn't any difference in facilities so the $15 is to cover the franchise fees I guess.
As far as quality goes, it really does "just depends". We've stayed at some that were very nice, but we've been to some, not stayed at, that were not worth the price of admission.
We stayed at a lot of campgrounds this last excursion and my opinion is that many, if not most, of them were pretty run-down, with some bordering on just plain shabby. In our experiences the middle to western part of the country had the campgrounds that needed maintenance the most. Our experiences with campgrounds/RV parks in the eastern states was that more of them seem to be in a better state of upkeep. The overall campground/RV park state seemed to radiate "I'm tired". Not all by any means, but many.
