I define too expensive as anything that costs more than I am willing to pay. You mentioned KOA's being overpriced. When we travel and need to stop for the night mid-trip, we generally avoid any campground. We stop a max of 8 hours. It wouldn't be worth paying $5 to have access to a campground for that short time. We pull in, go to sleep, wake up and get back on the road.
Before we owned a motorhome, we used KOAs because they were convenient. A few times there were campgrounds close by that were cheaper. We went to the KOA anyway because we knew they would have something in place for late arrivals. We've gotten to other campgrounds late at night without reservations to find no late arrival policy or instructions.
I don't drive around looking for the cheapest gas. That's just silly - wasting gas to find cheaper gas. I will use GasBuddy to find out which exit has cheaper gas, but I'm not driving out of my way to save a few pennies a gallon.
