I have always compared prices relative to my assumed value or reward. Everything. Always have. My assumed value and necessity of reward determines if something appears to me to be "too expensive".
And that need for reward has some people with their credit cards maxed out and no savings account, IMHO
It is true that vacation spending does trump everyday spending. If we are in NYC we are going to go on that cruise around Manhattan. :B
