I don't believe it's all relative. It's about values and what they used to mean and what they mean today. It wasn't that long ago in history that the Depression and the Great Recession of 2007/2008 had an impact and still does on millions of people's lives and those that were not able to recover. The value of a dime still means quite a bit to many people.
I'm not a shopper and only purchase things as I need them. I'm your worst consumer and don't like having stuff just because it's the novelty of the day. Best price to me is everything and sometimes going a bit out of the way can take you on an adventure or a sight you would never have seen. In the U.S. we use Passport America, state parks (although I have a distaste for paying day use fees when I'm not a day use person but paying for an rv spot for a day) and we use websites for boondocking and under $10 a night stays and of course GasBuddy. In Mexico it is almost exclusively boondocking.
We stayed one night on a four month trip outside of St. Louis and paid $30 for the night. Video arcade, fenced in pool, sardine can sized sites, bicycles and people everywhere. Lines for the showers, a store, towels and clothes hanging all over well you get the idea.
That was it for me, I felt like we were in a FEMA or concentration camp.
