When family vacationing, I stick to about 6 hours of driving. We can leave early and be where we want by 2 or 3 in the afternoon.
When I was living in VA with the family in FL, I would leave after work and stop at a Flying J and sleep in their RV spots, then get up early to make it home in time to take the kids to school on a Friday. The folks at the Flying J got to know me well over the two years I did that...
Even now, if the trip is an 8-10 hour trip, we will leave the night before and drive until 10 or so, pull off for about 6 hours of sleep (truck stop), with the intent of pulling in around checkin time at our destination...
