How long a trailer and be comfortable towing on a long trip

I am back on the camper market - children are grown and out of the house and I no longer need a trailer with bunks. My tow vehicle is a 2008 Silverado 1500, 5.3 L, 4wd, crew cab. I had an initial self imposed limit for the length of a new camper that was under 27'. This is mostly because of ease of towing and maneuverability on a planned trip from Ohio to the desert southwest this summer. Sales people and others are telling me that I can easily handle campers up to 30' and that the difference between 27' and 30' will not be very noticeable. Increasing my acceptable length definitely opens up many more floorplans and options.

The question is, given my tow vehicle, what would be a maximum trailer length that I can handle and still be considered safe and comfortable to tow. I do understand that this is a very subjective question and one that has been asked in one form or another countless times. I appreciate your experiences, ideas, and suggestions.

Thanks!

Tom
