How long to go from idea to execution for a trip?

It depends. Sometimes we say "let's go camping" and are on the road an hour later. We are currently planning a 5 week trip to the Grand Circle of UT, NM, AZ and CO. We have been planning it for a month, and won't be done planning it till about the time we leave in early Sept.
