Since the question starts at the "idea" for a trip and ends at "being on the road", for us that usually means a minimum of 3 to 6 months, sometimes much longer for big trips.
We can be on the road in a few hours, but living in New England, we never go anywhere without reservations. Our favorite places to camp need reservations 6 or even 11 months in advance to get good sites. If we are headed out to new places we'd also never arrive without reservations.
