If I were having to take vacation time and do a 1200 mile trip, I would fly and stay in a hotel or with the sibling or even the parents. We try to max out our drive time to 6 hrs of driving, 350-400 miles. That will usually take us about 8-9 hours with pit stops and food.
We have two kids that are 12 and 9. That's about as far as I can stand them cooped up in a vehicle together.
