A lot of times when we have a long drive I'll wake the kids up at 2:00 am and load them and the wife up and that way we can cover a lot of miles before everybody wakes up and we can pull off for breakfast. It just depends on the type of trip and what you're trying to accomplish.
I have driven the long hard days towing and honestly I have wised up and determined a slower 400 miles per day pace is simply more enjoyable.
The entire trip, drive and all is part of the adventure / vacation. Make it pleasant and enjoyable vs. an endurance challenge.
