I think there's a generational element to some of these answers. Those of us working with limited vacation days are more likely to push hard to maximize time at the destination. A lot of times when we have a long drive I'll wake the kids up at 2:00 am and load them and the wife up and that way we can cover a lot of miles before everybody wakes up and we can pull off for breakfast. It just depends on the type of trip and what you're trying to accomplish.
Eggzactly!
Or leave after work, stop for late dinner, kids fall asleep for the night, me n my beautiful wife take turns driving. Knock out a bunch of miles without any b!tching from the back seat!
Realistically, without going nuts on driving in shifts, 2 good days drive with a decent nights rest on the road is doable.
Generationally speaking, I have a job where I'm somewhat accustomed to randomly having to switch shifts or work a full day 24hrs straight through. So if I'm well rested I can hop in and drive pretty much as long as I want. Combine with limited vacation time as Ida said, makes for some Cannonball Run road trips sometimes!
Oldest kid is in 8th grade now. Soon he can start taking shifts behind the wheel.....
As much as I want to get there, I have passed the Cannonball run phase of travel. I want my entire vacation be enjoyable including the travel.
Making a Cannonball run is too much like work. I do not consider an endurance challenge behind the wheel enjoyable. I rather squander my time at CG along the way sitting around a pool vs. being trapped behind the wheel. ...............BTDT
