If I am traveling when my wife is sleeping, I can average about 65 MPH on a 460 mile drive. That is a trip that is about 70/30 interstate vs state highway, and using my aux diesel tank so I don't stop for fuel, and the only "bathroom breaks" are stopping on a remote off ramp.
If I am driving this same route with my wife awake, I average around 57 MPH. Which means maybe two bathroom breaks and no fuel.
Moral of the story is it is hard to average more than 50 MPH over longer distances.
I can generally do a bit better than 55 with the wife and three little kids on long days. Stops for fuel, bathroom (many), three meals on a long day, etc. But I'll push my speed on an open highway or freeway up to the 70-72 range if conditions permit. And yes, that's under the speed rating for my tires. There is a fuel economy penalty to be paid but in some scenarios the time saved is more valuable than spending a little more on diesel.
I'd venture I could guess the general ages of the posters in this thread pretty easily.
Fuel economy penalty when going over 70??? If u can't see I was traveling at 75 with 5mpg. We had left elkCity, OK heading West with 40 mph winds. We did not care about mileage we wanted WARM WEATHER!!! It was 24 out.
