The story of not knowing what a ton weighs is just that, a story.
She told the story of "I didn't know what a ton weighs" because it sounds better than, "I was lazy and didn't feel like backing up."
Much like when an officer pulls you over for speeding and asks you "do you know how fast you were going?" You're not going to say, "hell ya, I was going 75 in a 55, so what." You're going to say; "aaaaaaaaaaaa, no I don't officer,"
It just sounds better. Get it?
