How many pull a toad behind their fifth wheel

I tow a 18 foot ski boat behind my fifth wheel in Utah.

It's awesome to take all the toys with us to Lake Powell, Flaming Gorge, or Bear Lake!

I would sure hate to be launching my boat every day with a Class A/B/C motor home. It's great to park the fiver, and then just pull the boat in and out daily (or just beach it nearby).

If anyone has questions about laws in Utah, feel free to contact me.

for what it is worth. I emailed Idaho and Utah DMV. Idaho said no problem, completely legal and Utah gave me a phone # to call

Thanks for your insightful addition to the thread. Your post is well thought out and very rational. It's much more important and reasonable to worry about a tandem towing RV than people driving with their ability impaired by drugs and alcohol, of those that drive well over the speed limit wrecklessly, those who are texting, eating, drinking, yelling at kids in the back seat, those that are inexperienced, or those people in their senior years who should have had their license revoked years ago, those that are driving cars with bald tires, bad brakes, worn out suspension, etc. Yep, tandem towing is the biggest danger out there. :R

Don't know what to say Doug, other than I have lost more than one trailer tire on my boat, tandem behind my 5er. It was never a problem knowing it happened, nor was there any more damage than if I was towing it solo.

Bionic Man - I have had a flat on my Sidekick when towing it with my 30' MH. Fortunately my DW was following in her own vehicle and could let me know. I AM an attentive driver. Likewise had a pin on the tow bar come out (long story) and it took a few moments and another vehicle waving at me for it to sink in what might be causing the vibration. I suspect noticing the problem would be even harder if I had a fifth wheel trailer between my tow vehicle and the toad.

Sorry, but speaking from many years of first hand experience, this is untrue. While it may be advantageous to have those sensors (and a camera), you will know when you have a problem without them. I know I have.

Thank you for all the replies. I checked the website given and Montana, Idaho and Utah all say the same thing. No laws given. The fifth weighs 2200kg/4840 at the rear axles and the Tracker weighs 1500/3300. Ran them both over the scales recently. I have to build a subframe to raise the fifth anyway so was thinking about running the subframe right to the rear of the trailer and hook the car to it. We do not need a commercial license for this in Alberta and if California is an issue we just won't tow it there. Still on the fence about this whole thing so will keep gathering info. will also trt to email DOT in the various states to get their position on this.

It seems there was a topic a while back, with pics, with what was left of a Jeep, I think. It was being flat towed behind a 5er, started to sway and flipped. Seems the long overhang on the trailer creates havoc with the towed steering. They work against each other.
