How much of battery weight transfers to tongue?

As the topic says, with batteries mounted at the front of a travel trailer, how much of the weight is sitting on tongue weight?

I ask because I need new batteries and am currently using 2 6v golf cart type which have me at over 150 pounds in batteries. Turns out that I never really used that much reserve amp hours. I'm considering going to one group 27. Simpler and maybe reduce tongue weight?

I do use WDH, so some is put back on the trailer. I'm thinking I could reduce tongue weight by 60 pounds or so going this route?

Buying today, so quick replies appreciated!
  • You do know that as soon a you go to a smaller battery, the next weekend you will wish you had the capacity of the larger setup.

Yep it happens all the time.
  • It's proportional, if the load is halfway between the axle and coupler it's 50/50, if it's 3/4 of the way it's 75/25. In this case it's probably close to 95/5. (for purposes of this discussion I did not want to muddy the waters and simply disregarded the normal 12 percent tongue load). Sufice it to say you will indeed save nearly 100 percent of the difference of the battery(s) weights in tongue weight.
  • I'm sure if you had some measurements, (batts to trailer axles, batts to coupler, weight of batts etc.) one of our member engineers could figure it out, but I agree with Dutchmen above, don't worry about it. Unless you are very tongue light then the removal of that weight will not affect either your towing ability or the stance of the truck.

  • I wouldn't worry about it. Reducing weight on the tongue is a non-issue. ADDING weight is. You, or your truck will not notice any difference.
