Yah, I wish it was more, but, that's about normal for the configurations I've run. And according to other posts, it's not that far out of spec.
My previous install was 3 panels (360w) in parallel, with a Bluesky 2000e, maxing out at around 20a or 72%. I'm in series now with a 24v battery bank. I'm rarely in any weather under 70°. Regardless, it's plenty 'o power.
Your getting 40a from 500w is darn good. Perhaps you are colder.
Edit: Controller in Bulk =26.0v @ 23.2a = 603w Ambient = 74deg, sun directly overhead.
