how real do your electric 'fireplace' flames look?

I haven't really seen one of these in person. I had assumed that the 'flames' on the electric fireplace units look hokey and unrealistic. But some folks on another recent thread commented that they ...

In the past we had a real fireplace at home, we now have a gas one so I know what a real flame looks like. I have seen some electric one that I had to look at closely just to make sure they were fake, they looked that good.
