How to Beat the Heat & Bugs?

Planning a summer trip through the Midwest, anticipating lots of mosquitos and heat. 

Now, my favorite thing is sitting out on the patio and enjoying a cocktail in the fresh air. Does anybody have any tips for a) beating the heat and b) keeping those pesky bugs away.
