Interesting video and probably right on many points for many people. I do think the timeline is still a bit optimistic, but I could see ICE powered NEW cars could be obsolete by 2030. Actual adoption will take a bit longer. People went to cars over horses because it was a big jump in function. Lately, smartphones exploded because the increase in function. An EV does not perform that much better, enough that people will just throw away their old car and buy a new EV. Sure, if you are buying a new car anyway, the EV will be the thing to buy. (unless you want to haul heavy loads long distances) I also think it will be longer than 2030 before you will see a motorhome or a truck capable of towing an RV that is electric. Hybrid most likely for a while until they can design enough storage. I'm not at all impressed with stopping for 20-30 minutes to refuel on a long trip, but that will improve over time I'm sure. I have never seen an EV charging station, but like lottery winners they do exist.
He mentioned in the video a range of 200 miles as the tipping point. Looks like the Leaf is advertised at 100 miles. Are any of them at 200 miles now that don't cost 80K?
Tesla has never delivered a promised car model within 2 years of when they originally announced it would be available. There are going to be some delays in a lot of this stuff coming to market no matter who makes it.
Car sharing is just a horrendous idea and concept to me. But I avoid all forms of public transportation at all cost. I also recognize that it will be popular and perhaps even the norm. Thankfully, I won't live that long! ;) So says the guy who has not adopted a smart phone. Uber, Lyft, I'd probably walk before I'd call them.
Self driving cars will solve traffic issues in most crowded areas. I was just visiting my kids out in socal and saw all the traffic snarls caused by absolutely nothing but some idiot who likes to hit their brakes for no reason whatsoever. My wife would never drive if she didn't have to. I enjoy driving, so hopefully it won't be outlawed everywhere.
I hope his price curves for EV's work out. I like a little sheetmetal around me and some space inside, so these puny EV cars need to get bigger to suit me. A 70K car is right out. Sorry John/Angela, that car on the trailer just looks like death to me. The new Bolt looks like an oversized roller skate. Wonder why I drive an Excursion? :)
I sure wish these lower battery costs would filter down into batteries I can install in my RV. Cost of a Li battery is about 6X lead acid and stuck there for now.
Enough rambling..... thanks for the discussion John/Angela.
