I-5 bridge collapse

I hope no one was seriously injured! hopefully there will be an update to this.

Seems an oversize load was crossing and impacted the bride structure. Bridge came down not long after. 3 people were pulled from water. No news on any fatalities. This is going to be a mess for a while. Right now southbound traffic is backed up to Canada.

Some campers might have to cancel their weekend trips after seeing this. It's going to be a nightmare trying to get all that I-5 traffic around that bridge on such a busy travel weekend.

There are pretty easy way around this bridge.

It has been a long time since I lived out there, but as I recall, the only other bridge across the Skagit anywhere near the freeway is the old 2-lane Hwy 99 bridge between Mount Vernon and Burlington (I used to live right next to that bridge).
I heard there are 70K cars per day using the freeway. Putting all that traffic Through Burlington and Mount Vernon, and over a 2-lane bridge is a nightmare, I imagine!

Y'know, I bet RNMCB 18 (Seabees) would be glad to put in a temporary bridge!

One of the vehicles that went into the river was a pickup and travel trailer..guy and his wife....
They were able to climb onto the roof of the truck and were rescued after about an hour.

Not the kind of Memorial Day camping trip I'd want to be part of.

Bridge collapsed because it was somehow hit and damaged by a semi pulling an over sized container load.

Latest NW news is three into water, all out safe! Driver of the Ram was towing a trailer by the sounds of interview. He backed up story of oversize load clipping side of the bridge!

I'm pretty sure they replaced that bridge a few years ago with a new one! I'm amazed that there wasn't more vehicles in the water.

Bridge is an old bridge that was classified as deficient because of narrows lanes, low clearance etc. I'm sorry, but if 1 truck hitting part of the bridge can make it collapse, I would not feel safe driving on it. What if there was a 5 car accident and everyone hit some part of that bridge. It should be structurally strong enough to take a hit from something without collapsing.
