The basic problem and the cause of the failure is the grain of the lumber`used to attach the steel bracket. Without replacing the board that split, the next best course would be to repair the original split, fill the original holes and apply a fiberglass mat and resin to the lumber. This reinforced board can then be machined (drilled ) and the bracket reattached. Damn, this stuff isn't hard to do (a lot easier than boat service)...... maybe I need to hang out my shingle for RV repair.
