This past weekend, we went camping at Watkins Glen State Park in NY. We had a great time but the weather was spotty. On the way home, we encountered sustained cross winds in the neighborhood of 20-25 mph and gusts over 50 mph. We went through two strong thunderstorms as well. There was also a tornado warning that I wasn't aware of until after I got home. Fortunately a tornado didn't develop. My camper is a 27' Heartland Trail Runner (loaded weight is in the neighborhood of 8,500 Lbs.) My tow vehicle is a 2015 Silverado 2500HD. My hitch is a Propride P3. It did a fantastic job making sure we had no sway but we were rocked pretty good on occasion when the gusts were strong. We stopped at a rest stop and right behind us, in came a Ford 3/4 ton gas pickup pulling what looked to be about a 24' Air Stream. As we were walking into the building, I said to the guy..."Some wind out there today!" He replied with "I haven't noticed the wind at all" and pointed to his truck and camper. I discontinued talking at that point. Now I understand that some campers tow better than others and some tow vehicles perform better than others but you can't tell me that with crosswinds of 20+ mph and gusts of 50 mph, along with strong storms that you can't feel anything. I call BS! What say you?

That guy is still trying to convince himself why he spent so much money on his trailer..

Air stream trailer WILL handle winds better than conventional trailer due to less frontal area (rounded front), curved sidewalls and rounded rear end.As to not noticeable in cross winds...gusts BS!He felt it with his truck....regardless of trailer..But an Airstream does tow nicely......almost don't even know it's back there :B

I can feel/tell/etc wind gusts head on, tail, side, etc just standing there onthe side of the road...almost knocked down a few times after stopping on theside and got out to talk to others sitting it out on the side of the roadDitto in my 2 seater that is barely 40" tall and shaped like a bullet...can feelit toss me aroundDitto in my cars, mini van, K5 Blazer, Suburban and Silverado....can feel itI've seen semi's on their side when rolled up to the check point where the highwaypatrol was telling everyone to stop and sit it out on the side of the road because several semi's were blown overMany are clueless and wouldn't even know if their trailer became unhitched androlled into a ditch...or as stated...denial or braggart that their stuff is better than others

I had a similar experience going through Gettysburg about six years ago. Lots of gust. Even blew a rain deflector off of one of my windows and blew cover loose on tongue mounted bike rack. Turns out there was a tornado in the area that I was unaware of at the time
Nevertheless my PSD Excursion towing a 10.5K loaded 39' trailer using a Hensley was rock solid. I was traveling 15 south at the time
I never felt a whole lot of anything while driving except the cover and rain deflector came off/loose which forced me to pull over.
Once pulled over I could feel the gust, but while driving it wasn't very noticeable. So I do believe it's possible not to feel the gust no BS involved

Ok, it's not important to me. I made a post about an encounter I had and that I didn't believe what the guy told me. If it bothers you that I made the post, then seek some sort of professional help for your issues. If you think I'm full of BS for conveying what happened in an internet forum, then again, seek some sort of help. For those of you that replied with an intelligent reasoning why the guy might have been experiencing an incredibly wonderful towing experience and my analysis of the situation was off the mark without targeting me at the same time, then I say Thank you! People that take the time to explain a different point of view in a way that can be widely accepted is what makes this site great. People that attack others, well I just feel sorry for you. I'm sure you mean no harm because you can't help it and don't know any better, but there is help out there for you. Really there is!

I tow a Airstream and you have no idea of what you speak. I trust that he had little issues with the wind while you had a great deal more issues.

Hey Rob, I find your post interesting. Seeing as nobody knows who this other RV guy is, I see no harm in your post. Now when I tow my 5th wheel many times I have stepped out of the truck and said son of a gun it sure is windy out here!. Not even noticing it while towing. It has to get darn windy for me to notice it. But with the TC that's a different story. I notice the side winds A LOT!!!!!!!

He might have explained why he had no trouble with the wind, such as low speed towing.

Rob, That WGSP is one of our favorites. Luv the area.

No BS Rob. We tow an Airstream with a Can Am set up mid sized sedan and it is a no drama event even on those windy, gusty days.

With the right TV and a properly set up rig the drive is sweet.

Not notice it at all?? unlikely. Noticeable but of no real issue? very possible.

There have been many many times I've come down the columbia river gorge and didn't realize how bad the wind was untill I stopped at a rest stop and got out of the truck. Did I notice it while driving? yes, but the effect was mimimal enough that it didn't concern me. I'm towing a 35' TT with my crew cab 3/4 ton.

The gorge is known for bad winds, probably 50% of the time or more figure 25+ mph sustained and 40+ gusts on some stretches.

When not towing in the gorge, again, I can feel it in the truck, in my sedan, virtually never notice till I stop, but it has a Cd of <.3 and designed for autobahnn runs. Our old accord, well another story, definitely could tell and had to pay attention same with the chevy 3/4 ton van.

It matters a lot to me cus I tow with an F 250. Great tow vehicle and I have never in my life noticed that i Had the 10.5 k fifth wheel hooked onto the hinney of the romping stomping gasser. :B :p
