If I understand, the front jacks were not all of the way down. Setting up, the FIRST thing I do is to put the front jacks down. The LAST thing before pulling away is to release the hitch.
I don't understand "in case I have to get under the pin if it won't pull...". To release the hitch on my Husky hitch, the jacks have to be extended so that most of the trailer's weight is off the hitch, and then the hitch's arm is easy to pull out.
if the jaws wont open, I might have to back into it just an inch or so to release the pressure on the fifth wheel plate.
