I dont understand!

On every forum I've looked about 4-Down towing vehicles, folk have said the Subaru Std Transmission can be towed 4-Down.

Yet as I get ready to buy a

2009 Subaru Forester 2.5X w/Premium Package (M5)

the dealer says his service and mechanics say the AWD CANNOT be towed 4-Down.

Is there a person in the world that knows?

    •Towable as is without speed or distance restrictions. See Owner's Manual for confirmation and procedures.
    •Please check your Owner's Manual for confirmation. Follow procedures within Owner's Manual for guidance when towing this vehicle.
    •When towing, the steering wheel must NOT be locked. Move the ignition key to the first position away from "lock" and confirm that the steering wheel can be turned from one side to the other.

    NOTE*** MANUAL TRANSMISSION If auto transmission, it must be trailered.

    Great website enblethen!!
  • There is a BIG DIFFERENCE between 4WD and AWD.
    4WD = Four Wheel Drive.
    AWD = All Wheel Drive (sometimes called "Full-time 4WD").

    With 4WD there is a selector lever marked "4WD" "N" "2WD".
    When the lever is in the "N" (neutral) position, the wheels are disengaged from the transmission and it can be towed "four down".

    With AWD there is no way to disengage the wheels from the transmission and it CANNOT be towed "four down".
  • Were you talking to Continental Motors in Anchorage? If you're in Alaska now, and in the Anchorage area go talk to folks at "A&A THE SHOP" at 4617 Old Seward. They're a couple blocks north of Continental. On the front of the building is a big red canopy that says Alaska's Independent Subaru Service. Subaru sued them to take the word "Subaru" out of their name because they were taking too much work away from them. Subarus are 95% of their work and they know way more about them than Continental does. If you're not up here, call them at 907/891-7163.

  • The dealer says the owners manual states ..."not over 30 MPH and not over 30-miles..."

    Yet other fourm members say they can be towed;

  • From what I have known about any Subaru is that none of them can be towed or at least it is recommended that they not be flat towed (some are maybe and some are no). Regardless of transmission, they all at minimum recommend a flat bed or a trailer.
  • Subaru and the owners manual should be able to help you.

    If you contact Subaru, it would be extremely helpful to have the VIN number handy.
