It is simply essential that I do it, and have it burned into brain that I did it. Kind of like a very conscious confirmation I tightened the drain plug, or locked my house when I left. If I cannot come up with those memories, I'll do it again just to be sure.
I do pretty much the same thing and even though I've been at this RV thing for 31-seasons I still forget things now and then, most often when I'm interrupted during the initial check list.
