Mine will only close across the door, it won't go the other way due to one of the awning arms.
A trap waiting to happen, as you found out. Lucky you it wasn't an emergency! I'm surprised any professional would have installed it that way.
I'd move that handle to the other side of the door and fix it so it can't fold across the door itself.
Think about that.... the Door is on the other side... How you gonna mount the handle there...:D
The handle on my Passport is the same way, it can only be swung to cover the door.. As to it happening again... I saw it happen to at least a dozen RV's at one time in a campground.. Kids thought it would be funny... since I have two doors and only one has the big pull handle it wasn't much of a problem... My neighbor... not so much I heard him hollering for help about 5:30 am and that's when I couldn't open my main door... just went to the bedroom door and fixed it.. then checked other RV's and un did the kids work...
