Wow . . . what a great multi topic thread and it all began with an opinion on composting toilets. I'm assuming then that some RV's have composting toilets? Hmmm, not for me, but then again we are of the mindset that the "tinkle" paper goes in the waste can and it gets burned later in fire pit. On our last camping trip, to a remote site with no waste disposal, I had the dogs' waste bags set aside to haul back down the mountain. DH grabbed them and threw them in the fire! I was aghast! He looked at me and said, "what do you think an incinerator toilet does?!", well, he was right. Hmmm.
That trip I mentioned was in our Jeep to remote mountain top campgrounds, something that is a bucket list of ours, and not places where we can take our FW. On the first trip, we knew right away why we have an RV - it's easier and much more posh! Tenting is A LOT of work. Second trip out, we're beginning to enjoy it, but hubby says at the end of the day, "next trip will be in the fifth wheel". That said it all. We completely understand the large RV concept and love it, but we still like the adventure of a backroad trip with the tent.
We too have solar panels on our RV, enough to run computers and TVs as we want. DH is a programmer and often works on the road. Yes, we didn't do it as a way to save money, but more as a way to be more independent. We've always boondocked, but on our first cross country trip with the solar system, we opted to stay in dry sites only at FS CGs that offered both, which saved us money and often had better views (and more secluded) than the sites with electricity. I was apprehensive at first, but am now sold on solar power. We still have a generator because you never know and since ours is a Honda, it's quiet too.
Back to the original OP's comment on composting toilets - well, if that's what others prefer, I say go for it, but it would not be for me either.
It’s not the poop, it’s the plastic bags. Plastic should never be burned in a fire pit. It pollutes, it makes a mess for the ranger or camp host and it is unsightly.
