Our manual one on our RV has the tensioned spring. So did our original over the deck at the house. Replaced the one at the house last year and they no longer have or need the spring inside for tension. It uses some type of worm gear that keeps it tight. Maybe manual RV awnings will go to the new type with no tension spring in the future. Hope so. Would not need to remember to hold onto that strap.
