Yes they can be replaced. I had a new kit installed in mine for just over $100. Could have done it myself if was at home. Complete assemblies are somewhat more expensive. I don't know that one brand is better than another. Spring tension puts a lot of stress on that little lever and dog wheel and eventually they just wear out. You will know when it is worn when the awning keeps trying to go back up with the lever in the down position.
It's not a complicated or particularly difficult job but do some research if you are going to DYI. Those springs can do some damage to your personal bits if they get away from you. It's a little like trying to change a garage door spring.
