Been there, done the manual awning for decades. Been out many times during early morning hours trying to retract the awning as a storm approached. Always got it in before any damage, daytime as well. No fun scrambling around.
Many times seen those who thought there awning would survive the weather even strapped down. They all had the clumps of sod still attached to the screw in tie down posts and totally destroyed awnings.
Totally love the electric ones we've had - with the auto retract or not. The awning comes in every night and every time we leave the RV. Nothing to worry about. Simple push of the button and it's back out. Motor problems, haven't had one, but not to say a manual couldn't have retracting issues either, as a matter of fact we did have a manual which didn't work right.
I'll do electric every time.
