I am really glad there still some out there that remember camping and the great outdoors. I can't help wonder what the Newbies think of these recollections.
I'm new to owning a camper (1 year of going camping with it) But I did camp a few times as a kid in the late 60's early 70's in sleeping bags under the stars and a couple of times with small tents. Here's what I remember.
1. Always woke up tired with a sore back. It seemed you could never find a spot to put your sleeping bag that didn't have a large root sticking up that duck into you all night.
2. Cooking over the open fire. Most of the food consisted of hot dogs on a stick. If we had a real treat, it was one of those sandwich making gizmos. 2 slices of bread filled with apples or some other fruit. Usually got burnt because they were left in the fire too long.
3. Smores! These were great if the melted chocolate didn't cause it all to fall into the campfire.
4. Tents with poles that had to be put together. Always seemed to have a broken pole or two with masking tape on them. No such thing as Duck tape back then. It would take 3 hours to set it up.
5. Leaking tent when it rained. Sometimes flooded tent if it rained hard enough.
6. Grown ups complaining that the coffee wasn't percolated long enough. Hands burned from touching the coffee pot that had been hanging over the fire.
7. Bug bites covering 80% of my body
I'll take today's version of camping any day!
