I didn't start going camping for the first time until I was 16. (1980) I had a high school buddy that had a girlfriend that had a cousin that was old enough to be an adult so we would all go to the park in our cars and set up a couple of tents. (You had to be accompanied by a adult)
As someone said no matter how careful you were you always seem to end up setting your tent up and sleeping on a rock or tree root.
I had a small tent of my own. The cousin slept in his tent and my friend and his girlfriend slept in the backseat of their car. (Well, they must have slept some of the night I assume.)
We cooked hotdogs over the fire on sticks and ate Hormel Chili out of the can. We set the can in the fire to heat it. (and we drank a few beers.)
Those were some of the best days of my life.
My friend married that girl and I now take their grandson out camping.
Though they are no longer married I am still friends with both of them. (The cousin passed away a couple of years ago.)
