I grew up in Alaska, so there's some different elements:
"Camping" always involved a tent and a backpack;
"Camping at ____" usually meant a boy scout or similar type gathering where there were tents and backpacks but it was a road-accessible location
"Car Camping on the way to _____" meant carrying a big tent from Sears (endorsed by either Ted Williams or Edmund Hillary, didn't seem to matter :)) and lots of gear that typically didn't fit in the backpack, airplane, or river boat....uniquely, "Car Camping" (vs. "Camping") meant that we could bring the Coleman Lanterns and white gas...a decided luxury step up from the small flashlights that were otherwise standard. Also meant that the 2-burner Coleman stove could be taken vs. the Primus or folding grill for cooking over the coals.
"Camper" meant what we now call a "Truck Camper"
"Site"....meant any number of things from a driveable patch of dirt on the side of the road to a maintained pull off to the few and infrequent "campgrounds" that had pump water or a sign saying "Creek>>>>" (hopefully accompanied by another sign "<<<
As the 50's and 60's faded into the 70's & 80's "RVng" became more popular, but one usually heard "I'm taking the "Travel Trailer" "Fifth Wheel" "Camper" to Hope, Big Lake, Glenallen, etc. The generic term RV didn't get used much until the late 80's IIRC.
