In reading the 5 pages of posts, a lot of good memories.
A point I'd like to make, relates to the question about "what newbies think" about these stories. Don't think you have to have camped in the 50s, 60s or 70s to rough it. In the 80s and early 90s, my young family and I camped from beds of pickups, Coleman canvas tents and Marmot backpacking tents. We used what we could afford, like many young families today at the parks I visit.
The natural progression from tent to pop-up, small trailer/5th wheel to larger trailer/5th wheel is still alive and well. And along with that, our memories and introductions of the next generation to the outdoors continues.
I guess my "then and now" is a paper back book pulled from a backpack and leaning against a tree to a Kindle pulled from the cabinet while I rest in my zero-gravity chair!
