First camping trip was in 1955 when I was 2 months old. Don't remember that one. I have been camping ever since. Have tent camped every month of the year here in ND. In the 60's we would take our vacations and go somewhere camping all the way, East coast, west coats, wherever, always camped. As a teenager you always made sure you had enough beer but barely brought any food.
While traveling and stopping for the night Dad would try to find a country school, school was out for the summer, had a play ground and most of the country schools had an outhouse. We all had our jobs when we stopped, Dad and my brother put up the tent, Mom started supper and I would find fire wood.
Finally in 2006 I bought a TT so my wife could go with the grandkids and myself. She HATES tenting. Now we have a 338 RETS Jayco Eagle, got admit I like it as I get older.
Still have the Coleman lantern (doesn't work), Coleman two burner stove, Coleman white gas tent heater and a Coleman stove top oven my Dad bought new in 1961, hard to find parts for that stuff now. I still use all that stuff, just not a lot. Have newer appliances I use most of the time now. Use the old stuff just for the memories.
Will be 60 this spring and there is nothing I enjoy more than getting the grandkids and going to a state park, national forest or a basic campground, sitting around the fire, seeing the stars and not being bothered by all the RV's lights, well lit campground street lights, generators and so forth. Getting hard to find that now, but ohhhh the memories.
