We started camping in 1988 with our two sons (8 & 4 years old). One of the biggest differences back then was the number of smaller rvs, and especially the number of popup trailers. We did a lot of camping at NY state parks, and back then, so many young families either had tents, popup trailers or very small (by today's standards) travel trailers. When we moved up to a 12' box popup that opened to 24', it looked huge to us! Over the years, the majority of campers have decided bigger is better, and the RV companies have made it possible by producing a lot of cheap but large travel trailers.
When the kids went to college, we moved up to a 29' Sunline TT, and after 10 years, we decided to downsize to the Minnie as it meets our needs even for longer trips.
Over the next decade or so, I think we're going to see better use of technology to produce lighter weight and more efficiently designed RVs. It seems to me that other countries have already taken the lead, but I also suspect that it has happened where folks insist on a certain minimum level of quality and are willing to pay. But....that's another topic!
