I remember camping in the late 1940s/early 1950s...
A canvas tarp for a ground cloth, and a canvas tarp over a rope for shelter.
No sleeping bags, just homemade quilts.
No cots, no foam pads, just rake the sticks and rocks away, put the tarp down, and lay out the quilts.
No camp stove, cooking was done over the campfire, in cast iron or enamel ware pots and pans.
No rest rooms, no showers, no water (except for the creek), no light pollution, no electricity, no generator. Yes, we drank, cooked with, and washed in water from the creek. Giardia was just one of the bugs normally found in the human intestinal tract.
No garbage service, no reservations.
Having an ax, bucket and shovel was required for fire fighting. If a fire started, you were expected to help put it out. No special training was required to dig a fire line.
Everything was packed in the trunk of a 1941 Hudson 4-door sedan.
Camp was always set up in record time, because nobody was allowed to head into the bushes for relief until the camp was ready!
