Having owned 2 of those years of Explorers, they have leaf springs. I`ve towed an Award TT which weighed in at 5k lbs loaded. with a 520lb tongue weight. Even mine didn`t sag as much as that one is. the trailer definitely has flipped axles. however they never got the proper rise hitch to match the new height of the trailer. It may be a bit of an optical illusion with the way the road is crowned, but the Explorer is still sagging in the rear and the front suspension is very unloaded.
Get a proper WD hitch and set the height of the hitch correctly and you would`ve never have noticed it!
