I started swapping ins. companies 5 yrs. ago cause each one was saving me $492 vs previous one......next yr when I swap they will owe me

One of those bank jars with the counter in the lid. Put your loose change in it. We saved over $100 so far. Then spent it for toys.

along those same lines every Monday we take all of the $1 bills we've accumulated during the past week and set them aside. it adds up fast.

Drive slower. Costs nothing and saves lots of fuel.

To save even more vehicle fuel - stay home.

I think I can honestly say, I have never purchased anything that saved me money in the long run, except paying off ALL my credit cards and never using any Credit Card again. Have not used a true Credit Card in over 20 years at least. THAT was the best thing I could have done. No interest!

We have a second checking account with a nice balance in it. When we need to purchase a high ticket item, we use that account. We then pay back to that account with regular monthly payments (plus our own interest rate). As a result, we get our own interest, not some credit card CEO for his Christmas bonus. THIS pays for itself and then some!

As said above, the best way to save is to drive slower. As for air filters, I'm not sure where you're going with that, but it's inconceivable to not change one because you won't recoup the cost.

The best thing one can do is pay off a credit card or other loan debt.

We not only camp but love traveling by Amtrak. Several years ago we followed my brother's lead and got an Amtrak Master Card. Almost all purchases go on that card and we pay it off every month so we pay no interest. We have been able to take one trip from Cleveland to Portland Oregon to Sacramento and back to Cleveland on Amtrak points. When I retired I took my secretary to Glacier Nat'l Park and the only cost was accomodations and rental car while there. Next week we are going to Washington D.C. for a couple days. This is not for everyone but we enjoy it.

You can save the most money by spending more to maintain your vehicle according to its service schedule. The money that you save not servicing it will cause you to spend a lot more when you have to replace the engine and or transmission.

example replace a real dirty air filter will give us better MPG, but how long far do we have to drive so the better MPG out weigh the cost of a new filter. LED lighting uses less juice but with the high cost I calculated it would take me 22 years to save over a CFL in my brick & stick house

So in short what are the best saving purchases that we can realisticly see a savings in the shortest payback time?

Its not just the cost of lost fuel mileage. A new or rebuilt diesel engine costs many times over what an air,oil or fuel filter will cost.

As for lights, the payback may be there by leaving some of the environment for our children and grandchildren.
